Billie Piper to Play Head of Music at Nevermore in Wednesday Season 2
Netflix has released fans’ first look at Billie Piper for her new role in the upcoming season two of Wednesday, the new gothic comedy series from Jenna Ortega. The 42-year-old actress joins the cast of Nevermore Academy’s mystery headliner as Isadora Capri, who, it has been announced, is the new head of music at the prestigious school.
Billie Piper will be known to fans for her gothic role as Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful. She plays Isadora Capri, a “formidable music savant and the new head of music at Nevermore.” Former child genius Isadora Capri takes a special interest in Wednesday Addams’ (Ortega) music skills and also helps guide werewolf student Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), who joins the series for season two.
Billie Piper was introduced with images from her scenes in Nevermore Academy, along with Netflix’s new update on the series. Wednesday first made its original debut back in November of 2022 and hit the ground running as a big success. It was watched by 252 million people across the globe, making Wednesday Netflix’s most-watched original English-language series of all time. Since its record-breaking success, Wednesday was renewed in January 2023 for a second season. Now we know for sure, season two will premiere in August of this year.
Wednesday centers on Wednesday Addams, a 22-year-old Jenna Ortega character, as she begins her studies at Nevermore Academy, a new boarding school for “supernatural weirdos.” The show mixes horror, comedy, and teen angst as Wednesday comes to terms with the school environment. It has earned Emmy nominations and has a loyal fan base following its success.
Season three of the show has also been confirmed, alongside Billie Piper’s casting.
Netflix has not only shared new information on the show’s highly anticipated second season and Billie Piper’s new addition to the cast, but more information about the future of Wednesday was released as well. Wednesday has officially been renewed for a third season. Additionally, a spin-off series is currently in the works, as The Hollywood Reporter noted. Co-creator Alfred Gough further teased the announcement, saying, “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”
Fans took to social media to let out their excitement about the announcement. The news of a renewal was confirmed by Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams, via an Instagram post of her own, “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official… we shall return.” Fans let their excitement show in the comments by saying things such as, “And for many more seasons,” “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”
Fans were happy to see that production will soon begin for season three. Fans hope the wait will not be as long in-between seasons two and three as it was between seasons one and two. While season two was announced in January of 2023, season two will still have a wait time of more than two years since the original premiere. Fans have been begging to keep the wait time between the third season and shorter than the wait for the second season. A fan summarized the sentiment of many others on social media by writing, “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait three years again.”
Tim Burton, 66, is continuing his position as the show’s executive producer and occasional director. The well-known director most recently worked with Ortega on Beetlejuice, the forthcoming sequel to the 1988 cult classic.
Season two is going to feature an all-star cast. Joining Billie Piper will be other stars such as Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Gwendoline Christie returns as the headteacher, Larissa Weems. Actor Luis Guzmán is also returning as Wednesday’s father, Gomez Addams.
Actress Ortega is also making a change behind the camera. She has recently spoken out after a podcast interview, in which she said she often “changed lines” and had to “put her foot down” on character inconsistencies. Ortega has now stepped into a producer role for the new season. Director Tim Burton stepped forward to defend her following the backlash, highlighting that her comments were taken out of context. Co-creator Alfred Gough also said the new role for Ortega made complete sense, saying she was already heavily involved with the creative process and had provided detailed and thoughtful notes on scripts in the past.
Joanna Lumley is one of the stars who has recently been added to the show. She told Entertainment Tonight about joining the cast and Tim Burton’s world, “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”
Fans will have to wait until August for season two, but in the meantime, fans of the series have the new installment of Beetlejuice to tide them over.
