New Ironheart Trailer Teases Clash of Technology and Magic
The last few months have been good to Ryan Coogler. His most recent film, Sinners, is currently smashing it at the box office, and the acclaimed director already has his next big project in the works. He’s set to helm Marvel’s limited series Ironheart, and today, the studio released a stylish new trailer in the lead-up to the show’s June 2025 premiere.
Marvel’s Ironheart, a six-episode series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart, a teen genius in the Marvel Comics who works with—and was a protégé of—Tony Stark. The Ironheart series will mark the final TV addition to the MCU’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced all the way back in December 2020, though it was expected to release in 2023 at that time. Marvel later revised its long-term plans to scale back on the number of projects it released per year. This was partly due to internal concerns about the market becoming oversaturated, and the June 2025 debut date is the result of the delayed premiere date being pushed to this summer. Footage for the upcoming series debuted at the 2024 D23 convention. It was described as “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center” that would carry a notably darker and more grounded tone than other MCU TV series.
Fans first got a glimpse of Riri in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, Riri finds herself at odds with Namor and the blue-skinned army after they discover that she’s invented a vibranium detector while attending MIT as an engineering student. As the film progresses, Riri forms a friendship with Shuri over their mutual love of science, and eventually constructs an armored suit, based on Iron Man’s, to help the Wakandans protect their people. When peace is restored, she leaves the suit with the Wakandans as she heads back to MIT.
The Sandwich Who Built a Suit of Iron
Ironheart, as you can guess from its name, picks up soon after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The official synopsis teases, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
The rest of the cast is made up of Lyric Ross (Natalie Washington), Alden Ehrenreich (Joe McGillicuddy), Manny Montana (Cousin John), Matthew Elam (Xavier Washington), and Anji White (Riri’s mom, Ronnie). Shea Couleé will also star as Slug. Jim Rash also returns to the MCU as the dean of MIT. Rash has played the role twice before, once in the comics and again in the 2016 MCU film Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed to be a part of the series, but as of yet, the studio has not revealed any further details about his role.
The new trailer wastes no time getting to the action. The opening scene features Riri walking into a closed pizza restaurant. A couple of minutes later, she finds herself trapped in a closed elevator full of poison gas with only two minutes to escape. The scenario is the result of an interview (her interviewer describes it as an “interview” over the intercom) with The Hood, a mysterious individual who set up the scenario. Over the intercom, he explains to Riri that she’s going to suffocate if she doesn’t crack open a box on one of the floors that has a gas mask in it. Riri isn’t having any of it, though, and, after dismissing the challenge, figures out a creative way to escape her would-be captor’s evil ruse.
It all seems to point to a series about the ethical lines one is willing to cross on the path to greatness—specifically, a main character as smart and driven as Riri Williams. The question then is just how far Riri will go to make her mark and, once she does, will there be a cost?
