Chevrolet just removed the covers on what might be the most aggressive Corvette ever built—the ZR1X. Revealed alongside the ZR1 at a recent media event, this hybrid, all-wheel-drive monster is not only a forward but also a complete leap into the future of high-performance engineering.
Built on the mid-engine platform of the eighth-generation Corvette, the ZR1X blends a front-mounted electric motor with a ferocious twin-turbo V8 engine. This combo produces an amazing 1,250 horsepower (919 kW), far more than the already remarkable 1,064 hp ZR1 output. It is a package meant to question the finest Europe has to offer.
An upgraded 1.9 kWh battery, which stores 26% more energy than the E-Ray’s pack, provides much of the power increase in the hybrid system. With this development, the front electric motor generates 145 lb-ft of torque and 186 hp, so providing the car with major grunt off-line.
The acceleration values are just astounding. Under two seconds, the ZR1X is expected to reach 0–60 mph using both power sources working together. Indeed, Chevy’s most recent creation formally belongs to the ultra-exclusive club of sub-2-second production vehicles.
Stopping this beast is also rather amazing. Chevrolet added GM’s first 10-piston brake calipers and fitted the ZR1X with continuous-weaved carbon-ceramic rotors measuring 16.5 inches. The outcome is: During Nürburgring testing, the car attained a 1.9 G braking force while falling from 180 to 120 mph.
Once the car reaches 160 mph (257 km/h), the front axle disengages for maximum speed efficiency—10 mph above the E-Ray threshold. Still, the ZR1X should still hit 233 mph (375km/h), exactly as the ZR1 did—only now with the added advantage of hybrid torque and improved cooling.
Buyers still have familiar body options: a retractable hardtop convertible or a removable roof coupe. Said otherwise, the ZR1X is a heavy machine. Its top weight is expected to be almost 5,000 pounds, weighing roughly 500 pounds more than the base Stingray with added electrification hardware and upgraded components.
Chevrolet insists the ZR1X is not only quick in a straight line. Under aggressive cornering, the hybrid Corvette can apparently keep 1 G of acceleration both laterally and longitudinally. Such accuracy results from a complete overhaul of the electronic systems of the ZR1X, which fixes early control anomalies of the E-Ray.
Under Josh Holder’s direction, the engineering crew worked hard to make the car behave better under heavy loads. Early test mules revealed unusual handling resulting from regen programming, which led Chevrolet to create new traction and stability control software designed for high tire deformation.
Customizing performance gets a boost too. Apart from conventional driving modes, the ZR1X has Endurance and Qualifying settings for track use and a special Push to Pass mechanism that lets the car run at maximum capability on demand.
The hybrid system brakes using more than just regen. Rather, rear brakes give extra clamping force to stabilize the chassis while energy is taken from the front axle. All of it is tuned for driver confidence, even under extreme pressure.
Fascinatingly, Chevrolet has set torque restrictions in lower gears not to compromise performance but rather to safeguard drivetrain components from the high loads the ZR1X can create. “We’re well beyond what the tires can handle anyhow,” Holder said.
Regarding EV range, Still up for debate is that. The E-Ray ran a meager 3 to 5 miles (5–8 km) on electric power alone; it is doubtful the ZR1X would run that far.
Although a formal price has not been announced, the ZR1X is expected to drastically undercut rivals from Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche—while perhaps outperforming them with the $174,995 MSRP.
Arriving in 2025, the ZR1X could represent the height of the internal combustion Corvette period. It might also be one of the last, arriving not just exciting but historic.
