The aliens are evolving in Invasion’s action-packed third season
You might not have been among the people watching Invasion. It is easy to get distracted by the Apple TV+ series in its early days. Silo and Foundation, two other high-profile projects in the streaming platform’s sci-fi slate, monopolized most of the attention.
Fanboys aplenty, but not everyone has found what to love in Invasion. The slow-burn approach to storytelling in Season 1 made it a polarizing series. Reviews were mixed, especially for the early episodes, with some viewers frustrated at the series’s hesitant pace. Even viewers who were fans of the show occasionally described their relationship with Invasion as love/hate.
For what it’s worth, there are moments to appreciate. Invasion has always featured eye-catching cinematography and an ambitious, uncompromising visual approach. The series’ writers and directors also had set their eyes on big, even audacious ideas, and frequently leaned toward them. Yet, as we’ve said before, it wasn’t always a smooth ride: the result was a show with big ideas and high concepts that didn’t always have the execution to back them up.
If the trailer for Season 3 of Invasion is any indication, though, Apple TV+’s sci-fi story is entering a new, more confident stage. Invasion has finally entered its stride, and that should mean a better, more complete experience for viewers.
Invasion: Grounded Beginnings, Bold Voices
Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and producer Simon Kinberg. The latter name will sound familiar from the many X-Men movies he’s worked on, as well as The Martian (producer/writer), an Oscar-nominated feature that may have also come to your attention at some point.
The concept of the series is itself a strong one: a global alien invasion, seen from the ground up by the regular people living in different parts of the world. English, Japanese, and Pashto languages and cultures inform Invasion’s story and its characters.
Season 1 of Invasion established the gradual onset of the extraterrestrial threat. While the aliens were no doubt imposing and even terrifying in their first appearances, the protagonists’ primary concern was their personal, emotional, and often interpersonal struggles. Frustrating for viewers expecting fast-paced action sequences and a riveting alien drama. But the necessary setup for a world-changing, planetwide event provided an ideal canvas for an intimate, character-first sci-fi experience.
When the second season began, there was no more hiding for humanity: the full-blown, game-changing alien invasion was now a reality. Season 2 adapted with a more high-octane approach to the material, and while the pacing remained unhurried, the stakes were higher, and the show had a newfound energy. It became about seeing how the characters who survived the first wave of alien invasion would fare in the radically different, post-invasion world: one where humanity had been confined to relatively small, artificially protected safe zones and had to learn to survive all over again. The survival element took the plot in darker directions, and many of the characters’ decisions and relationships were tested to the breaking point.
Season 3 of Invasion Looks Like the Action/Human Drama Balance Fans Crave
Season 3 of Invasion, picking up two years after the previous one, features the once again evolved threat: as the trailer and the official description reveal, the aliens have now reached their “apex” form.
This is where the differing perspectives on the ground that have been shown so far in Invasion will start to connect and overlap for the first time. The various main characters that were scattered around the globe in the previous seasons will now be united, this time on a high-risk mission to the alien mothership. The scattered, multi-POV storylines give way to the unification of characters and resources.
The series stars Golshifteh Farahani (as Aneesha Malik), Shioli Kutsuna (as Mitsuko Yamato), Shamier Anderson (as Trevante Cole), India Brown (as Jamila Hudson), Shane Zaza (as the controversial tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur), and Enver Gjokaj (as Clark Evans).
These six are all returning from previous seasons, but there’s a new name to add to Invasion’s international cast. Erika Alexander will be a main cast member for Season 3.
Strategically, Season 3 of Invasion has many opportunities to provide satisfying conclusions to storylines, while also delving into a wider scope. Those who appreciated the first two seasons have been waiting for the bigger-scale action and direct alien confrontation, and this season may finally get around to those concepts.
New character dynamics will also factor into the show, as former enemies, allies, and regular people are forced to cooperate for the best of the species. The extraterrestrial threat is also a whole lot more powerful in the third season, with the new creatures able to project what are described in the trailer as tendrils. Not great news for the beleaguered humans.
Invasion Season 3 is Set to Premiere on August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+.
