New Villain and Gorn Battle Await in Strange New Worlds S3
Paramount+ has just released the first official trailer for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The season will premiere on July 17, 2025, giving Star Trek fans more than a year to wait until new episodes become available. Until now, the only official content from the season has been an April teaser trailer. However, the new trailer gives audiences a good look at what to expect from the third year of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series.
Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended on a huge cliffhanger. The Federation colony world the Enterprise crew was on was under attack by the Gorn, and during the chaos that ensued, several crew members and other survivors were taken hostage. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the rest of the Enterprise crew were on the scene to try and take back the colony world, and Starfleet Command was ordering Pike to evacuate and leave the hostages behind.
In typical Pike fashion, he decided that Starfleet orders be damned. He defied orders and was in the process of trying to rescue the hostages when the credits rolled and Season 2 ended. We will pick up immediately from that moment at the beginning of Season 3. In October, footage was shown from Strange New Worlds: Season 3 at New York City Comic-Con. That footage was just a brief glimpse, but the trailer released today runs for over two minutes and gives fans a much better look at the series third year.
The footage we got from Comic-Con last year followed the seasons opening scene, which will continue directly from the season 2 finale with a massive space battle against the Gorn, who will continue to be a recurring villain through the third year. The trailer also picks up after the end of last years footage, so audiences have the opportunity to see this story and many more come to an epic conclusion. The trailer also teases a new bad guy who will also feature prominently in the season, giving the Enterprise crew another villain to take on in addition to the Gorn.
The trailer also confirms some of the different directions this season will take, in addition to the continued threat of the Gorn. Season 3 will include at least one episode that will focus on faith and religious themes and others that deal with love and duty. The episodes and the season as a whole will feature a variety of genres that have not been featured much in Star Trek television and films in the past. Season 3 will include more romantic, comedic, and mystery episodes, and it will look different from previous Trek shows in that regard.
The trailer shows that the crew of the Enterprise will remain intact, and Captain Pike will still be in command. As noted previously, the Gorn storyline will come to a head during the season, but they will also be introduced to a new foe who will test them like never before, where their loyalty, bravery, and fortitude will be put to the test. Strange New Worlds Season 3 will feature the usual main and recurring cast members, but there will also be some new faces. Among the newcomers is Cillian OSullivan as Dr. Roger Korby, a character who has been featured in the Star Trek canon in the past.
In Star Trek: The Original Series, the character was first played by Michael Strong, who made an appearance in the episode The Counter-Clock Incident from Season 1. Korby will be a renowned archaeologist who specializes in medical archaeology, but in the timeline of Strange New Worlds, he is the long-lost fianc of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Korby shows up out of the blue in Season 3, and it will cause some complications for Chapel, particularly because Chapel and Spock (Ethan Peck) have become romantically involved. Two other familiar faces to make guest appearances in the third year are Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. The two comedians will each be appearing in the new season, and according to the trailer, the tone of Season 3 will be broader than previous seasons of Strange New Worlds, featuring at least one comedic episode, as the trailer from April teased.
The scene ends with Spock and Oswalts Vulcan playing high five against each other in what is the seriess first R-rated scene to date. The scene features Spock teaching the other Vulcan how to play the high-five game, with Spock going too slow at the others request for the Vulcan to go down low. The Vulcan friend is visibly confused and asks Spock, Why would you do that? to which Spock replies, Because you are too slow.
Release Date & Season Schedule
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Episodes will then be released every week, each Thursday until September 11, 2025, which means that fans will be able to enjoy new episodes for almost two months.
Season 4 of Strange New Worlds has already been renewed, so it is a safe bet that the show will be around for a while. In the time it will take for the third season to arrive, audiences should not worry, as the first two years of the series are still available on Paramount+.
