Mi Casa Opens in University City

KNEAD Hospitality + Design, the group behind the recently established Mi Vida, has announced the opening of its new sister restaurant, Mi Casa, in University City. The restaurant officially welcomes guests at 3151 Market St., expanding KNEAD's presence in Philadelphia's dining scene.

Menu Features Tex-Mex and Unique Creations

Mi Casa offers a broad range of Tex-Mex favorites, including guacamole, nachos, and tacos. In addition to these classics, the menu introduces more unconventional fare such as mezcal meatloaf and adobo lasagna. According to KNEAD, the restaurant's dishes blend "spice, smoke and soul," merging flavors from the American Southwest and Northern Mexico.

Full-Service Bar and Dining Experience

The restaurant features a full-service bar, boasting a selection of over 100 tequilas and mezcals. Diners can enjoy brunch, lunch, and dinner, with the venue accommodating 138 guests. An outdoor patio area is also available, which can be rented for private events.

Culinary Leadership and KNEAD’s Background

The menu at Mi Casa is overseen by KNEAD's corporate chef Jonathan Dearden, a Northern Virginia native. Dearden gained national recognition as a top four finalist on Bravo's "Top Chef" Season 23, where he competed alongside his twin brother, Brandon Dearden.

KNEAD Hospitality + Design has a growing portfolio of 10 restaurant concepts, many with multiple locations. Mi Vida marked the group's initial venture into Philadelphia, with other branches in Washington and Virginia Beach. KNEAD was founded by Jason Berry, a University of Pennsylvania alumnus, and Michael Reginbogin, who previously worked at Washington Square, the precursor to Talulah's Garden in Philadelphia.

Connection to Philadelphia and Industry Recognition

Jason Berry expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Mi Casa to University City, highlighting his personal connection to the area as a Wharton alumnus. "University City holds a special place for me, and it felt like the perfect neighborhood to introduce this new concept," Berry stated. KNEAD was recognized as a semifinalist for the 2023 James Beard Award for outstanding restaurateurs, ultimately losing out to Philadelphia’s Ellen Yin.

Mi Casa is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Located in the heart of University City, the restaurant aims to attract guests from across Philadelphia.
